The Assimilation of Evangelist Billy Graham Into the Roman Catholic Church

by Wilson Ewin, Quebec Baptist Missions, Quebec,Canada

Editor: The following is a book review by Pastor E. L. Bynum, pastor of Tabernacle Baptist Church and editor of the Plains Baptist Challenger in Lubbock Texas.

This book contains 28 full-size glossy pictures of authentic Catholicism and the key persons who led Graham.

The author first went to French speaking Catholic Quebec in 1953 to minister among the Catholic population. Wilson has been jailed, stoned, manhandled, and threatened with death. He could never be classed as a Catholic hater, for he has spent his life to win these people to Christ.

The author does a good job in chronicling the amazing history of Graham's escapades with Catholicism.  He gives full credit to his sources, and he even quotes from the Plains Baptist Challenger on at least two occasions.

You will learn that Billy Graham said in 1948, "The three gravest menaces faced by orthodox Christianity are Communism, Roman Catholicism, and Mohamedanism". Yet, in February 1980, the The Saturday Evening Post quotes Graham as saying, "Since his election, Pope John Paul II has emerged as the greatest leader of the modern world, and one of the greatest moral and spiritual leaders of this century". This is indeed an amazing change of opinions.

Graham's theology has suffered in the passing years. Many quotes are given which show this to be true. When Billy Graham received his degree in November of 1967 from the Roman Catholic Belmont Abbey College, he said, "The gospel that built this school and the gospel that brings me here tonight is still the way to salvation". Why cannot people see that if this is so, then Graham preaches a false gospel?

Graham's Acceptance of the Mass

In Milwaukee on October 21, 1973, Graham stated:

"This past week I preached in a great Catholic Cathedral, a funeral sermon for a close friend of mine who was a Catholic and they had several bishops and archbishops to participate, and as I sat there going through the funeral Mass that was a very beautiful thing and certainly straight and clear in the gospel I believe. There was a wonderful little priest that would tell me when to stand and when to kneel and what to do...".

It is unbelievable that someone who calls himself a Christian and a Baptist minister would say and do such a ridiculous thing.

Reconfirmed Confirmation

In 1977 Notre Dame Crusade, he said, "Many of you want to come tonight and reconfirm your confirmation. You may want to come reconfirm the decision that you made when you joined the church."

We are sure that his Catholic audience must have loved this. A year later in Poland, preaching to another Catholic audience, he said"reconfirm your confirmation".

The book confirms that Graham sends the Catholics back to their false Church. In his crusades the Catholic inquirers are referred directly to the Roman Catholic churches. He has had Catholic nuns as counsellors in his crusades. He is very careful not to say anything that would upset the Catholics in his audience. Many times the priests, bishops, and cardinals of the Roman Church have lavished words of praise upon Graham.

The above facts, plus many more, are found in this interesting book.
