"...The church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth."
I Timothy 3:15

False Hope

During the war a certain sailor grew tired of wearing his life preserver but because his ship was constantly in an area of danger he was compelled to wear it continually. Many times he felt like throwing it overboard, but the thought of being torpedoed forced him to keep it on.

Then one day the wonderful news came; the war was over. The first thing he did was to tear off the life jacket, and running to the side of the ship he flung it over-board. As the life jacket hit the water, his face turned a sickly pale. He couldn't believe his eyes for the thing which he had put his hopes in during the many months of danger, sank to the bottom like a rock. It was a defective piece of equipment and had he jumped overboard he would have drowned.

Most people in this world are wearing spiritual life-belts which are just like that one. Some are trusting in their good works, others in false religions and still others simply hope that everything will turn out all right some-how.

How many times we hear someone say, "It doesn't matter what you believe as long as you are sincere."

Sincerity is a wonderful thing but it would not have saved that young man. If your hope is a false one you simply will not be saved. God wants you to see that all man-made "life preservers" are defective and doomed to failure.

In Acts 4:12 we read "Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved."

My friend, what about your spiritual life belt?

When you are called upon to leave this world, will it stand the test? There are many philosophies which look very good to man (As no doubt that life jacket looked to be in good condition) but they simply will not deliver you from eternal death.
