What America Needs

E. L. Bynum

From the Plains Baptist Challenger, September 2013

It is evident that something is drastically wrong in America, and it is real need of fixing. There is wide disagreement on what needs to be done. Liberals think that liberal changes in our government are just what the doctor ordered for the healing of the land.

On the other hand conservatives are convinced that changing the office holders to more conservative candidates is exactly what is needed. The truth of the matter is that they are both wrong. Don't get me wrong; I am a conservative and I vote for the most conservative candidates for public office. However, in spite of all our efforts, we keep going further and further down the road of ruin. Politics are important in their rightful place, but they are not the answer to our most severe problems.

America Needs God!

Our nation has forsaken the God of our fathers and gone after false gods. "Hath a nation changed their gods, which are yet no gods? but my people have changed their glory for that which doth not profit." (Jeremiah 2:11)

We need born again believers to start behaving like born again Christians. Instead of this, we see more and more believers that are living and dressing like the world, and talking like the world, and yet they expect God to bless them. God says, "... The LORD is with you, while ye be with him; and if ye seek him, he will be found of you; but if ye forsake him, he will forsake you." (II Chronicles 15:2)

This is exactly what is happening in our world. We are too busy with our own plans, and have left out God's plan for our lives. "For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water." (Jeremiah 2:13)

We cannot expect lost people to return unto the Lord, but a blood-bought person can turn to the Lord and seek His help with all of their heart. Often times the world is so churchy and Christians so worldly, you can hardly tell them apart.

The prophet wrote so long ago these words, and it seems that we are in the same condition today. Too many of God's people are satisfied with their current circumstances. "The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means; and my people love to have it so: and what will ye do in the end thereof?" (Jeremiah 5:31)

"Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded." (James 4:8) If we want God to be nigh to us, we must "Draw nigh to God." It is foolish to think that God will draw nigh to a pleasure mad people who are in love with the world, and only want God for times of emergency.

If a people want to seek the Lord, He is certainly available on His terms. "But when they in their trouble did turn unto the LORD God of Israel, and sought him, he was found of them." (II Chronicles 15:4) 'And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart." (Jeremiah 29:13)

America is in great need of a spiritual awakening and turning to God. It is the only cure for our nation’s problems. We are being smothered by big business, big government, and false religion. Loss of freedom and liberty lies directly at the door of the Church. False religion is filling the vacuum left by the true churches, and it is bringing in strange customs and laws that are detrimental to the truth.

What is the answer? "If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land." (II Chronicles 7:14)
